There are multiple Halal certified catering companies in Singapore, but no surprises there. Being a multi-racial country, you can expect to find countless eateries – from high-end restaurants to regular affordable coffeeshops – spread out all over our tiny island.
But what does it mean to be a Halal catering company in Singapore?
Catering to everyone
To begin with, offering Halal certified products allows Muslim consumers to be confident that the products they use are in alignment with their culture and beliefs.
Halal is an Arabic word that means permissible. A Halal certified product means that the product is permissible or acceptable in accordance with Islamic law. However, in order for products to receive this certification, they must be from an acceptable source such as a cow or chicken and slaughtered according to these laws.
Only upon being certified will the restaurant or eatery place is allowed to use and/or display the Halal logo. This will also mean that the business or the product will be more marketable as it caters to consumers of different race, cultures and beliefs.
Moreover, Halal status of certain food items is important to many Muslim consumers as it ensures that the foods are permissible, lawful and clean (in accordance with Islamic dietary laws).
However, certification isn’t a permanent thing. Halal certificates are usually valid for 1 or 2 years before they expire. As a result, restaurant and catering businesses alike have to renew their Halal certificate at least 2 to 3 months before the expiry of the current certificate. This is to ensure that the business is constantly in line with the certification conditions.
What is MUIS then?
Business owners can attain the Halal certification through Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS). This is also known as the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, and is the sole custodian of Halal certification in Singapore.
There are currently 7 types of Halal certification schemes to suit various categories of food in the industry. But whatever it is, in the case of being a Halal catering company in Singapore, business owners have to ensure that not only ingredients should be Halal, utensils and other things used for preparing food should also be Halal. The main reason for being a certified Halal eatery place is to be able to serve the Muslim communities and ensure that they comply with their religion demands.
For instance, Muslims must slaughter only the Halal animals and also say a short prayer. A sharp knife should be used to slaughter the animals and their blood must be drained quickly to hasten their death.
